Rioja is Spain's most famous wine region, located in the northern part of the country. It is renowned for its high-quality red wines made primarily from the Tempranillo grape, often blended with Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. Rioja is divided into three subregions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental (formerly Rioja Baja), each contributing to the diverse styles of Rioja wines.

Signature style

Rioja is best known for its red wines, which range from youthful, fruity styles to complex, aged wines with rich flavors and aromas. Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva are the key classifications, indicating increasing levels of aging and complexity. The region also produces excellent white and rosé wines, though in smaller quantities.

Climate

Rioja experiences a combination of Atlantic and Mediterranean climate influences. Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa have cooler, wetter climates due to the Atlantic influence, while Rioja Oriental is warmer and drier with more Mediterranean characteristics. This climatic diversity allows for the production of a wide range of wine styles.
