Solid particles that settle at the bottom of a wine bottle or barrel over time.

Why it matters

Sediment is commonly found in older red wines and some unfiltered wines. It is composed of grape skins, seeds, lees, and other particles. Decanting is often used to separate sediment from the wine before serving to avoid a gritty texture and to enhance the wine's presentation.
